Free traffic online is not really “free” in the sense that you need to put in some work to get this traffic. For example you need to spend time signing up for sites, submitting links and in many instances you need to create effective content and place it in the right places online in order to get enough traffic to produce sales. Believe it or not, having a lot of traffic driven to your site does not guarantee you will have enough desired sales of your product. What is needed are people who want your product to be driven to your web-site. Therefore, we must be careful to make sure we distinguish the traffic that we want for sales success to be “Targeted Traffic,” and not just traffic in general, even though there may be thousands of them that can be driven to your site.
Many people out there said that “content is king” when it comes to web traffic generation. Even though, IMHO, content is not the only king, I tend to agree with them. If done properly, content can attract free, long term, targeted traffic to your website. There are basically two types of Traffic that is available on the Internet to drive to your web-site: (1) There is Free traffic, which can be very useful for driving buyers to your site, but you must be aware that Free Traffic is not really free. No you don’t have to pay cash out-of-pocket for this particular traffic, but you will pay for it in terms of the amount of “time” it takes to generate free traffic. It is a much slower process.
1. Content attracts free search engine traffic
It has been well-known that the search engines love content. The more content you have in your website, the more keywords you can rank for, and thus the more traffic you can get from the search engines.
Keyword Intercept and Redirect. The Internet works with keywords and keywords phrases. Your prospective customers will be using very specific keywords to find information online. By determining what these keywords are, you can place your ads or affiliate links on the resultant search results page. Alternatively, you can optimize your websites around these keyword phrases to get search engine to list your sites in their search results. Either way, your goal in this strategy is to insert your links into the information search process and redirect these leads to your websites.
2. Content leads to links from other websites
There are two benefits of having incoming links pointing to your site. First, you can get direct traffic from people who click through the links. And second, incoming links can increase your search engine ranking. In general, the search engines count incoming links as votes to your website.
Infiltrate the Nest. Instead of redirecting traffic, you could go to the places where your prospective customers already are online. Your prospective customers would frequent particular discussion groups or social network groups. You can access these groups, and leave links back to your affiliate pages. Caution: You must do this in a subtle manner, as being too aggressive in this strategy will be counterproductive and may even get you banned from these sites.
3. Content attracts viral traffic
Viral marketing works by encouraging other people to transmit your marketing message to the others. If done properly, it can spread your marketing message around the Internet just like a contagious virus spreads around a society. There are various motivations that can encourage other people to spread your marketing message. One of them is the “desire to obtain material possession.” You’ve probably seen the tactic of giving people incentive to spread a marketing message.
Grow a Garden. If you want to catch butterflies, you could either use a net and chase after them or you could grow a garden and attract them to you. If you understand your target market, you could start a discussion group or service around a core topic of interest. For example, if you are promoting the 11 Forgotten Laws, you could start a Facebook group that send out inspiring quotes from the book or the movie “the Secret”. This way you will attract targeted traffic to your site and they will invite others too. You can promote your affiliate links in a non-intrusive way as a footnote or PS whenever you send out the inspiring quotes or stories.
Without a good marketing angle, the response to your ads and marketing effort will be very low indeed. The point here is that you need to have quality as well as quantity to get the best results from your traffic generation efforts.
You can also try to increase the viral effect of your content by making it easy for people to spread or tell others about your content, for example by providing an email link to your site’s visitors to email their friends or acquaintances about your content.
